Adding Integers

Pos + Pos = add and keep the sign (5 + 4 = 9)

Neg + Neg = add and keep the sign (-5 + -4 = -9)

Pos + Neg = subtract and keep the sign of the "larger" number                                                 (9 + -5 = 4; 4 + -5 = -1)

Neg + Pos = subtract and keep the sign of the "larger" number                                              (-9 + 5 = -4; -4 + 5 = 1)

Subtracting Integers

Step 1 - change to addition

Step 2 - change the sign of the 2nd term

Step 3 - follow addition rules

-9 - 8 =              -9 + 8 =
                          -9 + -8 =

                         -9 + -8 = -17

Multiplying Integers

Pos x Pos = Pos

Pos x Neg = Neg

Neg x Pos = Neg

Neg x Neg = Pos

Dividing Integers

Pos / Pos = Pos

Pos / Neg = Neg

Neg / Pos = Neg

Neg / Neg = Pos
